2010 - the African opportunity

With only 253 days to go until kick-off, the World Cup is closer than we think. Most of the stadiums are ready, the roads are still in disarray - but will be fantastic, the Gautrain is really exciting & the excitement is building. When hospitality is in place, the airports are up to speed and the crime problem is addressed - we'll be all set to go. It's not gloom and doom, and I have NO doubt that this will be the most awesome World Cup ever - and we will be extremely proud of what has been… Continue

About 36,000 spectators were in the stadium, where hosts Ivory Coast beat Malawi 5-0. The BBC's John James says the arena was packed for the return of striker Didier Drogba, who scored twice.

Our correspondent says the authorities tried in vain to control the pani… Continue

Mozambique - Nigeria: 0-0

Mozambique had two goals disallowed when held 0-0 by Nigeria in a 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™ African Nations Cup qualifier. Veteran striker Dario Monteiro from South African club Mamelodi Sundowns was the unluckiest footballer on the artificial Machava Stadium pitch in Maputo as he netted twice during the first half only to be ruled offside each time. While the Mozambican Mambas did not protest too much when an early Monteiro header was disallowed, the decision of the Eritrean match offic… Continue
